Hewes Library's collections are targeted at the research needs of undergraduates in a liberal arts environment. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) offers patrons access to materials from thousands of other libraries, public and academic, across the country and around the world.

ILL services are available to current Monmouth College students, faculty and staff, and is free of charge in most cases. Patrons from outside the immediate Monmouth College community are encouraged to contact their local public library for ILL service. ILLiad is the software system patrons use to request material via Interlibrary Loan.

To enter a request manually (i.e. not transfer a request from a database search), log into ILLiad and type in the citation information (book/journal title, author, journal article, volume, etc), then click "Submit."

  1. What is ILLiad? ILLiad is the software Monmouth College patrons use to request an interlibrary loan.
  2. Who can use ILLiad? All current students, faculty and staff of Monmouth College
  3. What can I request through ILLiad? You may request articles, books (be sure to check the Hewes Library catalog and the I-Share catalog first), scores, films, CDs and software. Items are lent at the discretion of libraries around the world.
  4. How do I log into my ILLiad account? Log into ILLiad with your Monmouth College network ID and password. (It's the same logon information you use to access your Monmouth College email.)
  5. How do I request an item through ILLiad? There are two ways to enter a request through ILLiad: through a library database or manually. When searching a Hewes Library database (like Academic Search Complete), click the red "Find This Item" button to search for full text access. The citation will be checked against Hewes Library resources, and if not found, a link to log into ILLiad will be provided. The citation information will automatically be transferred into ILLiad. After checking the information, click "Submit."
  6. What if I forget my password?  Go to the ILLiad logon screen and select "Forgot Password". Type in your Monmouth College network username and you will have the opportunity to reset your password.
  7. How long does it take for materials to arrive? Materials arrive, on average, in 7-10 days, but it varies greatly depending on the item. Articles, delivered electronically, may arrive much faster.
  8. How do I know when the item has arrived? You will receive an email (Monmouth College email address)
  9. Where do I pick up the item? If you requested an article, a link to retrieve a digital copy of the article will be included in an email. The article is yours to keep. If you requested a book, you will receive an email to pick up the item at the Hewes Library circulation desk.
  10. What is electronic article delivery? When an article you requested arrives, you will receive an email with a link to the article. The article is actually stored within your ILLiad account for 30 days. NOTE: you should save the article locally (flash drive, hard drive) or print it as it will expire from ILLiad in 30 days.
  11. What if I forget to pick up my ILLiad materials? Patrons are notified and items held for seven days. After seven days, the item will be returned to the lending library.
  12. What does it cost? It is FREE!
  13. When will an ILLiad item be due? Due dates are at the discretion of the lending library, but in general, in 3-4 weeks. Items that are overdue cannot be renewed and must be returned to Hewes Library.
  14. Can I renew ILLiad materials? Yes, however, items that are overdue cannot be renewed and must be returned immediately. To renew an item, logon to your ILLiad account:
    • Select "Checked Out Items" from the menu on the left side
    • A list of your currently checked out items will display.
    • Click the transaction number of the item you would like to renew. The transaction number appears in the left-hand column.
    • Click the red "Renew Request" link at the top of the page. This will transmit your renewal request to the interlibrary loan staff who will then contact the lending library.
    • Keep the item in your possession. You will receive an e-mail message in 1-3 days once the lending library confirms or denies the renewal request. If the item cannot be renewed and it is past the due date, please return the item on the due date.
  15. What if I return something late / lose an item / damage an item? Please contact the Access Services Manager if you have questions or concerns: 309-457-2188.
  16.  I can't make a request in ILLiad. Why am I blocked?  Patrons with overdue or lost items may have priviledges suspended. Please contact the Access Services Manager if you have questions or concerns: 309-457-2188.
  17. Can I put items obtained via interlibrary loan or I-Share on reserve?  No, ILL items may not be placed on reserve. Faculty should make a purchase request for course reserve materials.

I'm a first time user, do I do anything different?

The first time you login to ILLiad, you will be prompted to fill out your contact information. Once you have completed this set, you will not have to enter that information again and you can simply start using the system.
